Fear Isn't the Problem…. Letting Fear Make Your Decisions Is.

What if the biggest thing standing between you and the life you want isn't a lack of confidence, motivation or ability?

What if it's simply fear?

Fear of failure.

Fear of making the wrong decision.

Fear of what other people might think.

Fear of uncertainty.

Fear of looking foolish.

Fear of stepping outside your comfort zone.

The truth is, every single one of us experiences these fears. They are part of being human. Most of us aren’t comfortable with that feeling of fear, and so often we try to push it away, pretend it’s not there or worse, let it stop us from doing the things we truly want.

The difference between those who create meaningful change in their lives and those who remain stuck isn't that one group feels less fear. It's that they don't allow fear to make their decisions for them.

Fear Isn't Your Enemy

For a long time, I believed fear was something I needed to get rid of before I could move forward.

If only I felt more confident...
If only I felt more certain...
If only I wasn't so worried about what could happen...

Then I'd finally take action.

But what I've come to realise is that fear isn't the problem.

Fear is actually trying to protect us.

It's designed to keep us safe from things that feel uncertain or uncomfortable. It wants to protect us from rejection, failure, embarrassment, disappointment and getting hurt.

In many ways, fear is simply doing its job.

The problem is when we mistake fear for truth, and let it determine our choices, decisions and actions.

The problem is when we believe that because something feels uncomfortable, it must be wrong.

The problem is when we assume that because we're afraid, we shouldn't do it.

Instead of trying to eliminate fear, what if we simply accepted that it will always be there whenever we're doing something that matters?

The more we practice acceptance and learn to take action anyway, the easier it becomes to understand that fear is just a part of who we are, and the less power it has.

Because if you're growing, stretching yourself or trying something new, fear will almost certainly come along for the ride.

The goal isn't to silence it.

The goal is to stop giving it the final say.

What Has Fear Already Cost You?

Most of us spend a lot of time thinking about what could happen if we take a risk.

What if I fail?

What if I make the wrong decision?

What if people judge me?

But we rarely stop to ask the opposite question.

What has fear already cost me?

Has it stopped you from applying for that job?

Starting the business you've dreamed about?

Leaving a relationship that no longer serves you?

Joining the gym?

Travelling somewhere you've always wanted to go?

Having difficult conversations?

Pursuing a hobby you've always wanted to try?

Fear doesn't just protect us from discomfort.

Sometimes it also keeps us from joy, growth, connection and fulfilment.

It convinces us to wait for "the right time", believing that one day we'll feel ready.

But often, that day never comes.

Feeling stuck and not sure where to begin?

My Own Experience With Fear

I remember how nervous I was when I first joined my gym many years ago.

My mind was full of stories.

What if everyone is fitter than me?

What if I look silly?

What if everyone already knows each other?

What if I don't fit in?

Every one of those thoughts felt completely real at the time.

But I joined anyway.

And do you know what happened?

None of the things I'd worried about came true.

There were people of every age and fitness level.

There were others who had come on their own.

No one was paying attention to me because they were focused on themselves.

Looking back now, it's almost funny that I nearly let those fears stop me.

That one decision didn't just improve my fitness.

It introduced me to lifelong friends. We've shared coffees, dinners, movies, challenges and countless laughs together over the years.

If I had listened to fear, I would have missed out on so much more than a gym membership.

I would have missed out on beautiful friendships, laughs, experiences and memories.

It makes me wonder...

How many other wonderful opportunities are waiting on the other side of fear?

When instead of letting the fear dictate our choices, decisions and actions, we let courage take over.

Courage Doesn't Mean Feeling Ready

One of the biggest misconceptions we have is that courageous people aren't afraid.

The truth is, they're often just as afraid as everyone else.

The difference is that they choose not to let fear make the decision.

Courage isn't the absence of fear.

It's taking the next step even while fear is sitting beside you.

It's saying,

"I'm scared... and I'm going to do it anyway."

"I don't have it all figured out... and I'm going to take the next step anyway."

"This feels uncomfortable... but I know staying where I am is costing me more."

Every small act of courage builds confidence.

Not the other way around.

Five Ways to Stop Letting Fear Make Your Decisions

If fear has been holding you back lately, here are five simple things you can try.

1. Notice the story you're telling yourself.

Ask yourself: Is this actually true, or is it simply fear trying to protect me?

2. Focus on the next step, not the whole journey.

You don't need to know exactly how everything will work out. You only need enough courage to take the next small step.

3. Ask yourself what fear is costing you.

Sometimes staying where we are feels safer, but it's also costing us opportunities, growth and experiences we'll never get back.

4. Remember that confidence comes after action.

Waiting until you feel confident may mean waiting forever. Confidence grows every time you do something you once thought you couldn't.

5. Let courage make the decision.

Fear will probably always have something to say.

You don't have to argue with it.

Simply thank it for trying to protect you... and choose courage instead.

Final Thoughts

If there's one thing I'd love you to take away from this, it's this:

Fear isn't a sign that you're incapable.

It's often a sign that you're standing on the edge of growth.

The question isn't whether fear will show up.

It will.

The real question is:

Who gets to make your decisions?

Fear... or Courage?

Because the life you want isn't waiting on the other side of certainty.

It's waiting on the other side of taking that first courageous step.

If you're feeling stuck and know something needs to change but aren't sure where to begin, I'd love to help. Sometimes all it takes is someone to help you quieten the fear, reconnect with what truly matters, and take that first step forward.
