Stuck in the Same Patterns? 3 Reasons Why (and how to finally change for good!)
Have you ever felt like you’re stuck in a cycle…
You decide you want something to change, you’re motivated, you’re excited, you’re determined, and you start strong - only to find yourself slipping back into the same old habits at some point?
Then you’re annoyed, frustrated, disheartened and confused as to why you can’t seem to stick with it.
Because it’s not like you don’t want the change.
But here’s what most people don’t realise…
Real, lasting change doesn’t come from just wanting something.
And as we all know, motivation doesn’t last.
If it was that simple, you’d already be where you want to be.
So what’s actually going on?
Here are 3 reasons that get in the way of real, long-lasting change:
1. You’re Trying to Change Your Actions Without Changing Your Thoughts & Beliefs Behind the Actions
Most people focus on what they’re doing – their actions & behaviours:
“I need to eat better”
“I need to exercise more”
“I need to be more consistent”
But those actions are being driven by a version of you that hasn’t changed.
Your thoughts, beliefs, and self-identity are still the same - so eventually, your behaviour returns to match them.
Don’t get me wrong, taking action is a very, very important part of the process, however if the thinking and beliefs behind the actions don’t change, you’re more likely to fall back into the same old habits.
Because at a core level, we always act in alignment with what we think and who we believe we are.
If you still identify as:
someone who “struggles with consistency”
someone who “always falls off track”
someone who “never follows through”
…then no matter how motivated you feel at the start, you’ll eventually fall back into that identity.
You’re trying to change your life with the 5% of your conscious mind working against the 95% of what you’ve already programmed subconsciously – it doesn’t work and that’s why we can’t make change stick.
What to do instead:
Start shifting who you are being, not just what you’re doing.
Ask yourself:
Who do I need to become to create this result?
How does that version of me think?
What do they believe about themselves?
When you think in alignment with what you what, and identify as that person, you start changing the pathways in your brain to reflect that.
This is where real change begins.
Not sure how to take that next step?

2. You’re Relying on Motivation Instead of Rewiring Your Patterns
Motivation feels great… but it’s temporary.
It comes in waves – usually heaps at the beginning, and then it dips when things start getting hard, or when immediate results aren’t seen.
And when it dips, most people stop.
That’s because they haven’t actually changed the underlying patterns driving their behaviour.
Your habits are not random - they’re deeply wired responses built over time.
So when you try to “do something different” without changing the pattern… your brain pulls you back to what’s familiar.
The moment you make a different choice, the brain and body will want to stop the feelings of discomfort and uncertainty, so we revert back to our old habits and patterns.
All of a sudden we feel good again, comfortable and normal – because we’re back to familiarity.
This is what creates that cycle of: start → stop → start again
Real, lasting change takes time - and more often than not, it’s the small, consistent changes in behaviours and actions that creates the long lasting change you want.
The small, consistent changes in your behaviours and actions is what alters your patterns and habits, which your brain then starts to recognise as your new ‘familiar’.
What to do instead:
Focus on becoming aware of your unconscious patterns and habits.
Notice your default thoughts
Catch your automatic reactions
Interrupt the pattern in the moment
Because you can’t change what you’re not aware of.
Awareness is the first step to breaking the cycle.
3. You’re Operating From Your Past Instead of Creating From Your Future
If your thoughts, choices, and behaviours are based on what you’ve always done and who you’ve always identified with… then your future will just be a repeat of your past.
That’s what autopilot does.
It keeps you safe. Familiar. Predictable.
But it also keeps you stuck.
If you don’t consciously choose a new direction, you’ll unconsciously keep recreating the old one.
If you don’t operate from the vision of the future you want, the only option is to keep operating from your past.
What to do instead:
Get clear on the future you actually want.
Not just vaguely - but specifically.
Envision your future and then really feel the emotions of how that’s going to be.
Think and act like it’s already happened.
How do you want to feel?
How do you want to show up?
What does your life look like?
Then start asking:
“What would the future version of me do in this moment?”
And act from that place, not from habit.
So How Do You Create Real, Lasting Change?
It’s not about trying harder.
It’s about working on the right things.
Real change happens when:
Your thoughts align with what you want
Your beliefs support it
Your identity reflects it
And your actions follow
This is where the mind and body start working together – your thoughts, beliefs, feelings, actions & identity align.
Because thinking differently and behaving differently need to happen together.
Final Thoughts (and a little disclaimer!)
If you’ve been stuck in this cycle, there’s nothing wrong with you.
You’ve just been trying to change in a way that doesn’t actually work long-term.
The hardest part about change is to not make the same choice today as you did yesterday.
And here’s the disclaimer:
When you decide to make different choices, be ready to feel a little uncomfortable, unsure and unfamiliar.
That’s ok.
Accept that this may be part of the process and decide to take action anyway.
Once you understand this…
Everything starts to shift.
Because now you’re no longer relying on motivation or willpower - you’re creating change at the level where it actually lasts.
